On 12 April 2005, AC Milan and Inter met at San Siro for the second leg of a Champions League quarter-final, with Milan already leading 2-0 from the first leg. Tensions were high, as Inter were still smarting from a bitter Champions League exit to Milan two years earlier in 2003.

Amid the smoke and fire, Materazzi and Rui Costa — fierce rivals from opposing sides of the derby — ended up standing together near the center circle, simply watching the chaos unfold. At one point, Materazzi leaned his arm on Rui Costa's shoulder, a small, almost casual gesture amid what looked like a warzone.
